Captivating fanfiction, what if Sam had never returned to his brother?...

Cold. Humid. Pain. Blood. These were the only details that Dean Winchester registered as the gaping wound in his chest agonized at every heave of breath, spewing a steady flow of blood soaking through the rag into his hand onto the floor, forming a crimson puddle. As his time was ticking, the hunter sought to do something he’d long ago forbidden himself to do. Reaching into his pocket, he dialled a number his fingers had danced upon without ever truly dialling every day since August 31st 2002, which was now eleven years ago, when his brother had ditched the family business, and by consequence, Dean.

For the first time in a long time, Dean hit the call button and held it to his ear as if it were a lifeline, which it was, he’d be damned if he couldn’t say goodbye to his brother. When the line picked up, Dean thought he’d gotten the wrong number as a young girl answered. ``Hello? `` Dean was astonished, mouth agape. Not thinking he had anything to lose, he replied ``Uhh, Sam Winchester here? `` There seemed to be a pause, ``Yea, uhh, wait a sec-DAD!!!! Phone call! `` There was some indistinct rustling in the back as the girl probably covered the phone with her hand. The girl returned ``Sorry, Dad’s busy at the moment, could you call back in a few? `` Dean was shell shocked. Dad? Did she mean Sam? Of course she meant Sam. Well hell, little bitch did manage to get the apple pie life. ``Who is this? `` He asked, just to be sure. ``Sam’s daughter; Deanna, Deanna Winchester. `` From a far, Dean heard ``Dammit, Deanna, could you just hang up the phone already? ``

Dean heard the call die, and he pondered the thought of leaving it at that, after all he’d heard his brother’s voice, if only for a brief instant. But he was going to hell, and he’d gone through enough gore and evil in his life to deny himself the simple selfishness of speaking to his brother. All the pain with his mother, his father, Bobby, Rufus, Ellen, Jo, Ash, Adam, Kevin, Cas, Benny, Charlie, yea, he disserved something good, he needed direct vocal contact with the younger Winchester.

He dialled once more, his fingers having long since memorized the familiar pattern. It only took two rings before Sam’s tirade began, oh how he’d missed that. ``Look buddy, take a hint, I’m really busy right now, so if you could please just--``

``Hi ya Sammy. `` Dean interrupted. There was a pause, and a woof, as if Sam had just dropped something. ``Dean???`` He asked, incredulous. ``The one and only. `` He replied

``Oh my god, Dean, hey! Wait, what’s going on, is Dad okay? `` Dean smiled sadly, ``No, it’s uh, it’s not Dad. `` Sam’s voice turned worried ``Is it you, are you hurt, where are you? `` Dean chose to answer the latter.

``Somewhere in Arkansas. `` Sam seemed to pick his words carefully `` you on a hunt? `` Dean chuckled darkly ``Well, those sons-a-bitches never seem to give me a break, so yea, there was a job in town. `` Sam nodded through the phone.

``So how’ve you been Sam? Apple pie white picket fence work out for you like you wanted it to? `` Sam perked up. ``Yea, Dean, it’s been great. I graduated from Stanford, I’m a lawyer, you met my daughter, Deanna, I’m married to Jessica-``

``Moore, I know, I also knew about Deanna, sort of`` Dean completed. ``What, how? `` Sam inquired.

``What, you thought your big brother wouldn’t attend your wedding, now you’re just kidding yourself, Sasquatch. ``

``You were there? ``

``Yep. Almost fell asleep a couple of times, damn priest was practically writing a eulogy of Christianity and faith and bla bla bla, but yea, Sam, I was there.``

``Why didn’t you say anything? ``

``Sammy, all I ever wanted was for you to be happy. I was gonna tell you, but I saw you, you were dancing with a beautiful girl, you graduated, you had this little baby in your arms, and you just looked so damn happy, Sam. I can honestly say that I’d never seen you so happy in all your years on the road, and I couldn’t ruin the moment for you. I couldn’t live with myself if I took that away from you. ``

``Was Dad there? ``

Dean eyes teared up at the memory.

``I’m sure he would have loved to, Sammy. ``

``Oh, so he wasn’t there, a job I’m guessing? `` That familiar bitter tone was back.

``No Sam, I mean, he wasn’t there, as in he wasn’t here. ``

``What do you mean? `` An edge of worry was creeping into his voice.

``I mean Dad passed away Sam. The thing that killed Mom, it’s a demon, and it got Dad before he got it. ``

Sam went silent, and Dean knew he was trying to compose himself. ``When? ``

``About nine years ago. ``

``You’ve been hunting solo all this time? ``

``I had a few partners here and there, they all passed, damn demon’s good.``

``So that’s really what killed mom? ``

``Yea Sam, yellow-eyed demon, nasty scumbag.``

``Did you kill it? ``

``Yea, Sam, it’s over.`` Dean assured him, as his eyes drifted to the corpse of the vessel that inflicted so much pain on his family, to the host of the yellow-eyed bastard.

``Good, I always knew you would. Dad would be proud.``

``I hope so.`` he whispered.

``Listen, Sam, there’s a reason I called. I-uh, I gotta tell you something, before it’s too late…``

``Dean…? `` Panic was winding his voice.

``Listen Sam, I….I, well, see the thing is, in fact, uh, I just wanted you to know….``

The words felt foreign in his mouth, he’s never outright said it, not to anybody.

``I-I love you Sammy. And no matter what, that’s never changed.`` Sam’s blood chilled at the words, he froze, he was paralyzed, he’d always known it were true, and Dean knew he knew, so why would he now, after all this time….? Oh no. Nononononono...

``Dean, where the hell are you, what’s going on??? DEAN!!`` His voice was full-on freaked, and Dean heard his brother sobbing on the other end of the line.

``I’m getting in my car, where are you in Arkansas??``

All Dean could answer was a fit of coughs that he’d tried so desperately to hide this entire conversation.

When he finally regained composure of his voice, he said ``Its okay Sam, you’re gonna be okay.``

``Dean…? Dean, just hang in there, okay, I’ll find you, we’ll get you to a doctor or we’ll just have to figure something out, okay? ``

Sam heard the unmistakable sound of his brother collapsing and as he breathed his maybe final word ``Sam…..``

The line went dead, and Sam was driving in way past the speeding limit, his loud sobs wracking his body with guilt.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was only a few hours later that Sam barged into the warehouse, finding Dean flat on his back, practically swimming in a pool of his own blood. True to his word, Dean was alive, Dean had stayed alive for him, but barely, his head held just high enough to see Sam. He had the audacity of giving Sam his trade mark smirk and say, with the last bit of life still had; ``Goodnight Sammy.``
